Greasewood Flat entranceIt doesn’t get any more rustic than Greasewood Flat. Many folks from out of town come to get that “Cowboy” experience while they are visiting in Arizona. This place has it all, dining under the stars, live country music and a virtual museum of western antiquities.

This is a historic place located at Reata Pass and it used to be a stagecoach stop in the 1880s for stages crossing the McDowell Mountains. Some of the foundation and mortar of the original stage stop are still part of this authentic western restaurant.  There is also the original jailhouse across the street where they used to keep captured Indians.

I always enjoy taking friends and relatives to Greasewood. Kick back and enjoy the crackling fire by your picnic table. You might hear a donkey in the background because they have a pen in the back. There are lots of other critters there as well. Don’t forget to check out the baby rattlers!

I frequent Greasewood a lot because I don’t live very far from it. My favorite is their grilled green chilies and bacon cheese burger. They are fantastic! Add to that order a bottle beer and the evening becomes magical. These are not your ordinary burgers. They are quite large and grilled to perfection. You get a side of chips and a pickle too!

There is absolutely nothing fancy about Greasewood and that, mind you, is exactly its charm and appeal. If you are a people watcher this is the spot. It is really an eclectic mix. You have visitors from Four Seasons Resort down the road who come from anywhere in the world to see Arizona and our own local weekend warriors pouring in with their Harleys and Bourgets.

Their menu is simple but aiming to please. They also serve grilled chicken, hotdogs and bowls of chili. You can also get cowboy beans, chips and salsa.

If you are just visiting make sure you include a stop at Greasewood Flat. If you are a local, then you need to take it upon yourself to do a good deed. Steer your friends and family over to Greasewood. I guarantee everyone will say “Great Idea”!
